The epic prehistoric past of SA comes to life in New Kgodumodumo Center

The newest cultural treasure of South Africa, the KGODUMODUMO Dinosaur Interpretive Center, is officially open and the local population can visit free until September.

Free State, South Africa (23 June 2025) – Hidden in the radical sandstone cliffs of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, is a new center that celebrates the prehistoric treasures of South Africa. On June 22, 2025, the brand new Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretive Center officially opened its doors and South Africans offered the chance to walk alongside old giants and explore the prehistoric past in one of the most picturesque institutions in the country.

The name “kgodumodumo”, which means “something very big” in Sesotho, cannot be more appropriate. This striking, ultramodern center is more than just a museum, it has been brought to life a time capsule. Through interactive exhibitions and advanced displays, the Center brings paleontology, archeology and geology together in ways that cause curiosity and ignite young imagination.

It is the kind of space that makes learning an adventure. Children can wonder about fossils, students can deal with scientific research of world class and curious adults can rediscover the miracle of a long-disappeared world, all within the dramatic background of the Maturi-Bergen of the Free State.

And here is the best part: Sanparks has thrown the gates open to the center and has announced free access for all South Africans from now until September 30, 2025. Whether you are a school group, a student, a family from a neighboring village or a road tripper who chases culture, this offer is a celebration of access, education and pride in our shared hair.

To take advantage of the free access, just bring a valid form of South African identification. For communities adjacent to the park and the Thabo Mafutenyane district municipality, this initiative offers a rare and meaningful opportunity to make contact with our deep history, without barriers.

The center is already praised as a triumph of education, science and including tourism. So if you ever wanted to meet a dinosaur (or just make an impression on your inner child), this is your chance. The KGODUMODUMO center is not only a new destination, it is a roaring memory of how the story of Rich Zuid -Africa really is.
