The Eastern Cape province has observed a provincial day of mourning in Mthatha for the 92 people who died after floods battered the region last week.

Many were left displaced as a result of the inclement weather. According to provincial authorities, over 4 300 people were left homeless as a result of the heavy rains which led to localised flooding and damage to infrastructure.

It’s understood that 31 children are among the 92 lives that have been lost during the adverse weather in the Eastern Cape.

A minute’s silence was held at 11am on Thursday. A mass memorial service was also held to honour the victims, as the bereaved families prepare for the funerals of their loved ones.
