WATCH | First snow of winter falls across South Africa | The Witness

Snow has officially fallen across several regions of South Africa since Sunday morning as a powerful winter storm moves across the country.

High-lying areas of the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Lesotho have been covered with snow and temperatures continue to plunge.

Social media has been flooded with photos of the winter spectacle.

The snow has continued into Monday, with many places covered in snow. According to the Snow Report Southern Africa, the Sani Pass has received snow and residents should be on guard as severe thunderstorms are expected along the eastern and southern parts of KZN on Monday.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Disaster Management Centre is on high alert, following weather warnings issued by the South African Weather Services from Sunday evening.

Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, has urged residents to be cautious as these conditions pose a significant risk to human lives.

Cogta said that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre is in direct liaison with local municipalities to ensure all necessary systems are in place to effectively deal with any incidents arising from these severe weather conditions.
