The Patriotic Alliance won a seat off the ANC in the small town of Sutherland in the Karoo Hoogland of the Northern Cape. The ANC was able to hold off the PA in two other closely contested by-elections. The ANC also lost ground to the EFF and uMkhonto Wesizwe party in a safe seat in the small Free State town of Koppies.
