Eastern Cape police have launched a manhunt after a healthcare couple was gunned down in their home at the Dick Locality, Lusikisiki, on the night of Wednesday, 21 May 2025.
According to SAPS, the victims – a 39-year-old woman and her 41-year-old husband – were ambushed in a chilling attack at approximately 19:50.
The husband had just pulled into the driveway and was still seated in his vehicle when two armed men in balaclavas confronted him. With chilling precision, the attackers allegedly demanded to see his wife and forced him inside at gunpoint, per IOL.
For this reason, it seems to have been a calculated execution. “It is alleged that these two unknown men were looking for his wife.” Police said it is further alleged that the gunmen entered the house with the husband.
“On arrival inside the house, they asked for the wife, and when she emerged from the bedroom, they started firing shots at her and also shot the husband.”
Strangely, the intruders spared the domestic worker who was also in the house, a detail raising questions about whether this was truly a random act of violence.
The victims were both staff members at St Elizabeth Hospital. The woman was a professional nurse, while the man held a senior position as deputy director in the Eastern Cape Department of Health.
Police have opened a double murder case and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa expressed heartbreak at the tragedy.
“Losing a life is one too many. It is even more difficult when a health professional is involved. They play a crucial role in serving our communities.”
“These colleagues have departed at a time when the country relied heavily on their expertise as professionals who were serving their citizens with commitment and integrity,” she added.
As investigators comb through evidence, the precision of the assault and the selective targeting of the victims have left many wondering; was this simply a robbery gone wrong, or was something far more sinister at play?
