KZN braces for a big chill and possible snow | The Witness

KwaZulu‑Natal is bracing for another winter sting, with forecasters predicting icy temperatures, rain and even a chance of snow in the days ahead.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 (yellow) warning for the Midlands, cautioning of strong winds gusting up to 70 km/h.

SAWS forecaster Ayanda Nsele said low temperature is expected to hit part of the Midlands on Wednesday with 30% of morning showers expected. Strong winds are expected to follow this.

Nsele said residents can expect a cold Wednesday night, but the temperature will be cooler from Thursday.

“The cooler temperature will pick up over the weekend. Pietermaritzburg is expecting a weather temperature of between 17 to 18 degrees until Friday,” said Nsele.

High-lying areas of KwaZulu-Natal may experience snowfall on Wednesday as a result.

MEC for Cogta, Thulasizwe Buthelezi said disaster management teams have been placed on high alert. He said these teams are in communication with weather authorities and will continue to monitor the developing weather system closely.

“The safety and well-being of our residents are our priority. Our disaster management teams are prepared to respond effectively should any weather-related incidents occur,” said Buthelezi.

Buthelezi has also urged residents to remain vigilant and pay close attention to weather warnings and updates as they are issued by the relevant authorities.

“Taking proactive measures can significantly reduce the potential impact of the cold front. The Department of Cogta, through its Provincial Disaster Management Centre, will continue to provide updates and guidance as the situation evolves,” said Buthelezi.
