Best-ever show for Mpumalanga athletes at SA Biathlon Championships

Mpumalanga’s biathlon athletes shone brighter than ever at the 48th South African Biathlon Championships held in Oudtshoorn on March 22.

A contingent of 50 athletes from Mpumalanga showcased their talent and dedication at the national event, in which 912 athletes from around the country competed.

Notably, Samuel Tryhou secured a gold medal in the boys U19 age group, while Hannah Morgado secured a silver medal in the girls U13 category.

Biathlon boasts a rich history in Mpumalanga, with family participation being a core component of the biathlon community.

The enduring appeal of the biathlon was transparent as 13 Mpumalanga families competed at the SA championships. The value of national participation was evident for Mpumalanga – 20% of the team placed among the top 10 national achievers in their respective categories, and 80% attained personal bests.

Mpumalanga Biathlon is enthusiastic about the sport’s continuous growth and the proactive efforts of the provincial committee members who organised seven league events in the build-up to nationals.

This series of league events started in September 2024 and proved to be a significant catalyst in the success of the Mpumalanga team. Rob Ferreira High School has solidified its position as the home of biathlon in Mpumalanga. Leagues are also hosted in Middelburg.

School engagement saw a notable increase at the 2025 nationals. To qualify for school entry, teams must comprise of athletes across various age groups, all meeting certain minimum performance standards. The Mpumalanga school entries attained a sixth position by Hoërskool Nelspruit and a ninth position by Rob Ferreira High School in the high schools competition, with Laerskool Nelspruit 10th and White River Primary 14th in the primary schools competition.
