It was a solid day for the Southern Free State U18 girls and boys teams on Tuesday at the U18 Nationals held in Bloemfontein.
On Tuesday morning, the Free State remained on course to reach the semi-finals after Bianca Rees-Gibbs scored a string of goals to lead her team to an excellent 3-1 win against Western Province.
Rees-Gibbs took her tally to six goals and before Wednesday’s match she led the Girls’ A section in goals scored.
The Free State’s biggest challenge awaits today when they face South Gauteng. This match at the University of the Free State starts at 11:20am.
Meanwhile, in the boys’ section, Southern Free State and the Northern Blues played to a goalless stalemate in a match that could have gone either way.
Both teams had chances to win and Northerns came closest, but they missed a penalty deep into the second half of the encounter at the University of the Free State. The results would have been bittersweet for both teams, but a draw will always trump defeat.
The Free State will face Eastern Province in the Varsity at 10.10am. It’s a double header for the hosts, as they will also be in action against KZN Inland A from 5:15 p.m.
