The city of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) has encouraged residents, in particular those in informal settlements to remain vigilant because the risk of disturbing rain and localized floods increase in Gauteng.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level five warning for serious thunderstorms that are expected on the central and eastern parts of the country.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says: “This disruptive rain can cause flash floods in low-lying areas, in particular informal settlements. Residents are encouraged to prevent river flows from crossing during their daily activities and using pedestrian transitions designated instead. Motorists must also be careful while driving. “
