Western Cape police officer accused of murder released on bail

In Cape Town, a police officer from the Tulbagh Crime Prevention Unit, facing murder charges, has been released on bail of R1,000. The officer, Sergeant Jonathan Waterboer, appeared for his second hearing in the Tulbagh Magistrates Court following his arrest last week. He is accused of fatally shooting a 40-year-old man during an attempted arrest of the victim and his brother last month. Phaladi Shuping from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) reported that Sergeant Waterboer was detained by IPID on June 13. The case is scheduled for further investigation, with the next court date set for September 29, 2024.
