A new feature film, Poachers Moon, is currently being shot in the Northern Cape. The story is based on the collective unwritten history of South Africa and a fragile relationship between young boys from different races.
This is as the country transitions from apartheid to a democracy.
“This is a story of hope, a story of a black boy and a white young boy growing up in a farm and having to navigate social issues. It tells a story of just two innocent little boys having to navigate life with all the challenges,” says the Director of the film Mqondisi Ngubane.

The film benefits the locals, as most of the cast and crew are locals, and workshops to transfer skills are also being held.
However, filmmakers say while the province offers beautiful natural arts and raw talent, it is a logistical challenge to make movies in it.
The Northern Cape government says it will develop a strategy to make the province more attractive to filmmakers.
“That’s what we have to do as the provincial government, to look at this opportunity and ask ourselves a difficult question: ‘What is it that we can do to attract more such opportunities to our province?’ and you won’t be able to do that if you don’t have a strategy. We have to start to develop a strategy and create some incentives to ensure that to get much more of such initiative in the province. It would be much cheaper to have this project in Johannesburg; then the question that we have to ask ourselves is how to incentivise film producers to come to our province,” says Premier Dr Zamani Saul.
