Ex-EFF Limpopo chairman, now ANC member, held for attempted murder

Police have arrested Jossey Buthane, a 44-year-old ANC member and former EFF Limpopo chairman, for attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The arrest followed violent clashes between ANC and EFF supporters on May 18-19, 2024, in Juju Valley, Seshego, where shots were fired. A 25-year-old man, injured by a leg shot, was treated and released, while nine-year-old Tsiamo Lebaka, shot in the head, remains stable but in intensive care.

Buthane, who is accused of shooting the 25-year-old man, was granted bail and will return to court on July 2, 2024. EFF leader Julius Malema criticized the police for arresting only Buthane, despite evidence of others carrying firearms. ANC spokesperson Jimmy Machaka echoed this concern, suggesting the arrest was politically motivated to hinder Buthane’s campaigning for the ANC.

More arrests are expected as the police and Independent Electoral Council continue investigations.
