Floods in Eastern Cape, South Africa: 2 dead, 4 missing

Two fatalities and four missing women mark the tragic toll of severe floods in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province. The heavy rains primarily affected Kariega, Gqeberha, and East London, forcing emergency services into action. At least 70 people were rescued from high-risk areas across 55 operations, assisted by the National Sea Rescue Institute, South African Police, and other rescue services. The deluge has severely impacted infrastructure, submerging homes, sweeping away vehicles, and causing widespread power outages.

Authorities reported a vehicle carrying six people becoming stranded in the Brak River. While one male was safely rescued and four others found unharmed, an adult female was swept away and remains missing. Emergency services continue to tackle the aftermath, with Joint Operations Centers established in Gqeberha and Kariega to coordinate ongoing recovery efforts. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality stated that adverse weather persists, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents and first responders alike.
