North West HOD has tendered R470 million to the British hospital

Obakeng Eden Mongale, former head of the North West Public Works Department and current head of its Health Department, appeared in the Mahikeng Magistrates’ Court over the alleged irregular awarding of a R470 million tender to build the British Hospital in 2008. Released on R50,000 bail, he was ordered to surrender his passport and avoid interfering with witnesses. Investigations revealed that the tender was given to companies that did not meet requirements. Ilima Projects, one of the companies, was liquidated in 2010, leading to the spending of R57 million with additional remedial costs. Mongale has been placed on special leave. His successor, Dr. Andrew Lekalakala, also faces fraud allegations. North West Health spokesperson Gavin Edwards criticized Mongale’s initial appointment due to ongoing corruption issues. The case is postponed to January 31, 2024, amidst several other criminal cases involving North West officials.
