The farmers forum in Mpumalanga says stock theft is negatively affecting the finances of their members.

The forum’s chairperson, Jacob Jiyane was speaking ahead of their march to the Verena Police Station to hand over a memoradum. He says they are calling on the Police Minister to intervene.

”We don’t want to take the law into our own hands. Therefore, we plead with the minister of police to assist us because this is a national issue. It’s not nice being threatened at gunpoint. It’s very painful because we have lost so many lives especially old people and this has a huge impact on our economy,” says Jiyane.

Yesterday, police said one man had been killed and another seriously injured after they were assaulted by a mob for allegedly being involved in stock theft in Verena.

Twenty-six head of cattle, six goats and a donkey were reportedly stolen from a farm near Verena. A shepherd was attacked and robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli says the suspects were accosted.
