Moderate earthquake strikes Western South Africa, tremors felt in Cape Town

22nd December 2024 – (Cape Town) A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck western South Africa early on Sunday, sending tremors across multiple regions. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 2.51am local time (00:51 GMT), approximately 101 km west of Brandvlei, a small town in the Northern Cape Province.

The epicentre was recorded at a latitude of 30.45 degrees south and a longitude of 19.44 degrees east, with a depth of 10 km. Residents in Cape Town, the legislative capital, reported strong tremors during the event.

As of now, there have been no official reports of casualties or significant property damage.
