ANC reclaims Sweetwaters ward in by-election | The Witness

The ANC triumphed over the IFP in the Msunduzi Ward 2 by-election on Wednesday.

Mbongeni Zuma, the ANC’s candidate, will be sworn in as the new councillor for the Sweetwaters area after his party secured a victory with 1 602 votes, defeating the MK Party – which secured 1 164 votes. The IFP lagged behind with just 344 votes.

Bheki Mtolo, the ANC provincial secretary, expressed gratitude to the community of Ward 2 in Msunduzi for their trust in the party. He emphasised that the by-election results clearly demonstrated that the ANC is regaining its former strength.

“We attribute the success to the organisational renewal programme that has helped to rebuild, reenergise, unite and refocus the party on its historic mission. The ANC was established to lift ordinary members of society out of abject poverty and ensure an improved quality of life. The people of Ward 2 and KwaZulu-Natal in general are saying the ANC is the only party with the capacity and political will to use all spheres of government to change their lives,” Mtolo said in a statement.

He added that only a strong and united ANC can deliver the future that people aspire to.

Meanwhile, the ANC reportedly secured another victory in the Northern Cape, regaining control of the Hantam Municipality in the Calvinia area. The DA had won the ward during the 2021 local government elections.

Northern Cape ANC chairperson Dr. Zamani Saul said this marks the third municipality the ANC has won back in by-elections over the past three months.
