LIMPOPO – As the festive season approaches, the Greater Giyani Municipality (GGM) has launched an intense campaign to clear the roads of unroadworthy vehicles.
The initiative, which began two weeks ago, aims to ensure public safety and enhance road traffic management in preparation for the increased movement of people and goods during the holiday period.
According to municipal spokesperson Steve Mavunda, the focus of the campaign is on tackling a range of issues that contribute to unsafe driving. “We are specifically targeting overloaded vehicles, unlicenced drivers, and transport vehicles operating without the necessary permits,” he explained.
Mavunda added that the municipality’s efforts were part of a broader initiative to minimise road accidents and ensure that all vehicles on the roads meet the required safety standards.
“As a municipality, it is our responsibility to ensure responsible driving and safety on our roads. The presence of overloaded and unroadworthy vehicles is not acceptable at all, festive season or not, as it poses a serious risk to drivers and other road users,” he said.
Motorists caught driving without proper licences or in violation of transport regulations face fines and other penalties, while vehicles that fail roadworthiness tests are impounded until necessary repairs are made.
The campaign has already resulted in several vehicles being taken off the roads, with owners required to pay fines for their release.
With the expected influx of visitors and residents visiting relatives during the festive period, Mavunda said the municipality is taking a proactive approach to prevent accidents and maintain order on the roads.
According to him, the crackdown will intensify as the festive season approaches, with increased monitoring at key checkpoints and along major routes, including the R81 road. The municipality warns all residents and transport operators to adhere to road safety standards and cooperate with authorities to ensure a safe festive season for everyone.
“As a municipality, we remain committed to ensuring that the roads are safe for all road users during the festive season. Therefore, we urge all road users to ensure their vehicles are in proper condition before they hit the road, as our officers will be on every major road, looking for, and searching unroadworthy vehicles,” he said.
