Ten people killed in crash in Free State at the start of the festive season

The Transport Minister and her deputy have ordered authorities to investigate the cause of a deadly crash that killed 10 people in the Free State on Sunday morning.

According to Ministry of Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi, Minister Barbara Creecy and her deputy, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, have instructed the Road Traffic Management Corporation to investigate the cause of the accident and submit a preliminary report within 48 hours.

The accident, involving a white Scania tractor unit and a white Toyota Quantum, took place about 20 km from Koppies on the N1 highway towards Kroonstad.

Creecy and Hlengwa expressed their condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those who died in the accident.

They pointed out that the accident comes shortly after the launch of the holiday road safety campaign.

Creecy and Hlengwa stressed the importance of motorists heeding road safety messages.

“Long-distance drivers are urged to take a break after every 200 km or every two hours of driving. This is due to the proven fact that fatigue is a silent killer,” said Msibi.
