Seven classrooms at the North West school were burned

Seven classrooms at Tosca Primary in Kagisano Molopo Municipality were set ablaze by community members, who were angry over the closure of some facilities by the Ministry of Labor. The Northwestern Department of Education plans to provide mobile classrooms to resume teaching on Monday. The violence erupted after the Ministry shut down a block of three classrooms last Tuesday due to poor conditions. Community members attempted to close the entire school and vandalized property, burning classrooms, furniture, files, textbooks, and damaging Class R equipment. Education MEC Viola Motsumi condemned the violence, calling it “extremely sad and disturbing,” and emphasized the importance of schools as knowledge centers. The incident has resulted in the loss of five days of learning and all student data. The Department of Education has condemned the act strongly and called for the culprits’ immediate arrest. Advisors will assist students and teachers when classes resume.
