Grandfather, other rapists jailed in Northern Cape; Raising awareness of child protection | News24

A 55-year-old man received a seven-year prison sentence at the Upington Magistrate’s Court for raping his 15-year-old granddaughter. The girl reported the incident to her grandmother, leading to the man’s immediate arrest. In another case, a 43-year-old Galeshewe man was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping and attempting to rape his 17-year-old stepdaughter. The 2017 crime involved threats against the victim and her mother. Additionally, a 30-year-old man in Upington was sentenced earlier this year to 18 years in prison for repeatedly raping his 13-year-old niece since she was five.

To promote child protection, South African Police Service (SAPS) units visited Northern Cape schools, reaching over 3,000 students from May 20-22. These initiatives aimed to educate children on bullying, sex crimes, and safety, emphasizing their rights to protection and dignity. The campaign is part of Child Protection Month, promoting the safeguarding of South African children. To report abuse, contact police or the Children’s Line.
