MTN achieves record network availability of 98% in Limpopo

MTN South Africa has ramped up its modernization program, achieving an impressive 98.33% daily network availability in Limpopo. The 2024 Resilience Plan, completed early this year, focuses on installing backup power systems at hub locations to counteract network issues during load shedding. This statewide rollout has boosted throughput, reduced drop-call rates, and increased data volumes. Acting regional GM Isaac Monama reported that in 2023, MTN invested R10.1 billion in network expansion and grid resilience, with more than R2.6 billion specifically for energy and security. Despite 335 days of load shedding last year, network availability climbed to 95%. In Limpopo, network availability surged by 27.18%, with resilient sites maintaining over 97% availability under Stage 4 load shedding. MTN aims to end 2024 with network availability of 96% under Stage 6 load shedding. Additionally, 4G coverage in Limpopo reached 99.41%, and 56 new 5G sites were activated with plans to add 60 more by 2024. Monama emphasized MTN’s goal of achieving 95% broadband coverage by 2025.
