One man was confirmed dead and three others were rushed to hospital after the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned this morning, Sunday December 1.
The accident happened on the R38 near Kaapmuiden at around 08:50.
According to Moeti Mmusi, the provincial spokesperson for the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison, the driver lost control of the vehicle which then overturned.
“We can confirm that one person died at the scene while three others were rushed to a nearby hospital in a serious condition,” said Mmusi.

We now have an idea as to which roads are problematic and which days of the week are also a problem, particularly during the holiday season.
He said the identity of the victim who passed away would be revealed after his next of kin have been informed.
“We have noted that there are many accidents on some of our roads. The R40 is among 11 roads that have been identified as priority routes based on the study and data that we had analysed between 2018 and 2023, ” said Mmusi.

“We now have an idea as to which roads are problematic and which days of the week are also a problem, particularly during the holiday season,” added Mmusi. He said the department would also be looking at issues such as the number of weekends during the month of December because that had an impact on planning and traffic patterns, as well as volumes across the major roads.
“We shall deploy our traffic officers along these roads to enforce compliance by road users,” explained Mmusi.
“We request road users to observe speed limits, avoid overloading and adhere to all road traffic rules,” concluded Mmusi.
