Gregory Nthatisi expressed his confidence that Gallants will make the Free State proud and celebrated the team’s hard-fought path to the semi-finals after beating defending champions Stellenbosch FC with a decisive 1-0 win on Sunday (3/11) at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium.
Nthatisi congratulated the team and highlighted the victory as a testament to Gallants’ determination, skill and dedication. “Their achievement not only demonstrates their commitment to excellence, but also brings tremendous pride to our city,” he stated. He further emphasized the positive economic impact on the metro.

“With this important competition in prospect, we expect a substantial economic boost for the city. Hosting high-profile games not only showcases our rich sporting culture, but also boosts local businesses and generates crucial economic growth opportunities,” said Nthatisi.
“As a city that holds sports close to its heart, we are proud to support events that bring our community together and lift the spirits of our residents.”
The Free State has suffered from economic stagnation for years, partly due to crumbling infrastructure and political instability. But Marumo Gallants’ move to Bloemfontein has revived hopes among many fans who dream of the club regaining the once iconic status of Bloemfontein Celtic FC, restoring a sense of unity and pride.
Gallants has slowly strengthened Bloemfontein’s reputation as a city for major sporting events. A June clash between South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, and Mozambique saw a huge turnout for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, although a later match against Congo was moved to the Eastern Cape as Toyota hosted Cheetahs on the same date were from the Toyota Challenge.
The Carling Knockout Cup semi-final between Gallants and Sundowns will start on Sunday (10/11) at 3pm and a large crowd is expected at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium.
Gallants coach Dan Malesela stressed the importance of his players going into the match without fear to avoid getting into trouble against the seven-time Premier Soccer League champions.
