The ANC Women’s League in Limpopo says they believe the complaints brought before the Health Professions Council of South Africa, in relation to the remarks made by then MEC for Health in Limpopo, Dr Phophi Ramathuba in August 2022 at the Bela Bela hospital are politically motivated and have nothing to do with her conduct.
This week, the council started a formal inquiry into Ramathuba’s conduct, over the remarks she made two years ago about foreign nationals burdening South Africa’s health system.
ANCWL provincial spokesperson Marble Kalembo says they respect the HPCSA, as the professional health regulatory body, however they would like to caution them to exercise restraint and not politicize processes about this case.
Kalembo says the HPCSA must focus on matters that are of paramount importance like issues of bogus doctors who are mushrooming in communities.
She says as the ANCWL they support Ramathuba’s remarks adding that she was not being xenophobic but was only addressing the issue of limited resources in South African health facilities.
