ActionSA welcomes Prime Minister’s departure and demands equal treatment for all senior officials involved in Free State corruption scandal

November 15, 2024

ActionSA has acknowledged the ANC’s decision to place Free State Prime Minister MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae on a one-month leave of absence over serious allegations of corruption and money laundering. While this may seem like a step toward accountability, it raises further concerns about selective justice and transparency. Notably, the Prime Minister’s husband, Mangaung Metro Chairman Lawrence Mathae, and former Prime Minister and current Speaker of the Free State Provincial Legislature, Mxolisi Dukwana, are similarly implicated in this corruption scandal. These allegations require an equal investigation, and ActionSA is calling for them to be placed on leave immediately to allow for an impartial investigation.

Compounding the disturbing developments, the ANC’s swift appointment of Jabu Mbalula, brother of ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, as acting Prime Minister raises suspicions about the integrity of the party’s actions. This decision, taken immediately after Prime Minister Letsoha-Mathae was placed on leave, appears to be a calculated move that puts political loyalty above real responsibility. ActionSA questions the timing and motives behind Mbalula’s appointment as it undermines the ANC’s claims of commitment to the fight against corruption.

ActionSA stands firm on the principle that no one is above the law, especially those who hold public office. Allowing concerned officials to retain positions of influence undermines public confidence in the Free State, which is already vulnerable due to widespread issues of unemployment, poverty and corruption. ActionSA is calling for urgent, independent investigations by the Hawks, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Public Protector into all officials involved, including Prime Minister Letsoha-Mathae, her husband Lawrence Mathae and Speaker Mxolisi Dukwana.

Only with real accountability and transparent action can the Free State hope to restore trust and deliver the services its people deserve. ActionSA remains committed to advocating ethical governance and will continue to hold public officials accountable for the rampant corruption that is hampering progress in the province.
