Transnet gets the ball rolling on sustainable energy for ports in the Eastern Cape | Company

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is inviting proposals for renewable energy projects at Eastern Cape ports. They plan to build solar and wind power plants at Port Elizabeth and Nqura, with a 7 MW capacity and a 6 MWh battery storage system at Nqura Port. Additionally, TNPA aims to install solar desalination plants, producing 0.8 and 0.5 megaliters of drinking water daily at each port. Acting CEO Phyllis Difeto highlighted the need for sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly port operations in response to global shipping trends. This move comes as both ports were recently ranked low in the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index, sparking disputes from TNPA and the South African Association of Freight Forwarders (SAAFF) over the index’s accuracy and lack of consideration for recovery initiatives. They assert that port performance, while needing improvement, wasn’t accurately portrayed in the rankings.
