In December 2023, Cape Town International Airport recorded an 18% spike in international visitors compared to the same month the previous year. This trend persisted into early 2024, with tourist arrivals from January to April rising by 13%. These numbers outpaced pre-pandemic records, surpassing 2019’s figures by over 55,000 visitors.
‘Cape Town is consistently ranked among the world’s top travel destinations, and it remains an affordable option compared to cities like London and New York,’ says Wesley Cowan, Managing Director of Galetti Auction in Cape Town.
The city’s popularity was further solidified in October 2024 when Cape Town clinched the title of Africa’s Leading City Destination at the World Travel Awards for the fourth consecutive year.
Tourism: A Pillar of Cape Town’s Economy
Tourism continues to be a cornerstone of Cape Town’s economy, with one in every 23 residents working in the industry, according to Stats SA. Despite ongoing challenges such as load-shedding, Cape Town’s efficient infrastructure and scenic attractions keep both tourists and investors interested. Cowan notes, ‘Cape Town’s well-maintained infrastructure remains a key draw for both tourists and businesses.’
Three key trends for Cape Town’s festive summer season
With tourism on the rise, Cape Town’s property and travel sectors are experiencing noticeable shifts. Cowan outlines three major trends expected to shape this year’s holiday season:
Growth in short-term rentals
Cape Town’s Airbnb market has outpaced popular destinations like Sydney, Barcelona, and Amsterdam, with a median occupancy rate of 71%.
‘There’s strong demand for investment properties here,’ Cowan says. ‘Tourists increasingly prefer staying in local-style accommodations for an authentic experience rather than booking larger hotels. This trend could lead to more buy-to-let investments, with some sellers opting for auctions to increase competition and selling prices.’
Demand is also rising for commercial property in suburban areas like Constantia, Claremont, and Newlands, as local and international brands expand into Cape Town’s thriving market.
Rise of experiential tourism
Known for its luxury, sustainability, adventure, and immersive experiences, Cape Town’s tourism sector is evolving to meet travelers’ desire for meaningful interactions with local culture.
‘From food and wine to culture and natural beauty, Cape Town has something for everyone,’ Cowan explains. New attractions, like the Durbanville Wine Safari and the Uber Safari service that connects Cape Town with nearby safari destinations, highlight this experiential tourism trend.
Additionally, airline expansions from companies like United Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, and Norse Atlantic are increasing accessibility, particularly with affordable direct flights from the United States and London.
The economic impact of cruise tourism
The cruise industry contributed R1.32 billion to Cape Town’s economy during the 2023/24 season, creating nearly 2,000 jobs across tourism, retail, and hospitality sectors. High demand from international visitors fuels this sector, with travel companies launching packages to attract even more tourists to Cape Town’s shores.
A bright future for Cape Town’s tourism and property markets
As Cape Town’s tourism campaigns, including the ‘Choose Cape Town’ initiative, continue to gain traction, the city is poised for a successful festive season. ‘I’m optimistic about the season’s potential to boost both residential and commercial property markets,’ Cowan adds, noting that rising demand is likely to benefit the local economy.
With its blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and thriving economy, Cape Town remains a top choice for global travelers, ensuring another prosperous season for South Africa’s tourism capital.
