Chaos erupted in Mbombela on the morning of November 7, as three wildebeest tore through the University of Mpumalanga campus, leaving a trail of panic in their wake.
The wild animals, seemingly driven by sheer instinct, charged across the campus grounds until the rampage took a tragic turn.
Two of the wildebeest, in a desperate bid to escape, plunged from an elevated area and died.
The Lowvelder reports that the tragic incident happened at about 08:30 as the students were preparing to sit for end-of-year exams starting at 09:00.
Despite this unusual incident, the students managed to compose themselves and the exams proceeded as scheduled. However, should any student apply for special permission as a result of what happened, university spokesperson Tlangelani Ubisi said the university would consider it.
The publication received two videos, one showing three wildebeest rampaging across a rocky outcrop on campus, with the second showing students scattering for cover in all directions as the seemingly spooked wildebeest navigate between campus buildings.

Apparently, one student was injured when she tripped and fell as she was running to safety. Ubisi said she had been taken to hospital for treatment and was in a stable condition.
Ubisi also confirmed the tragic fate of the two wildebeest, revealing that they fell from an elevated area on campus in a horrific tumble.
A chilling photo captures the aftermath—two lifeless carcasses lying side by side on the paved surface. Authorities believe the impact was so severe that both animals likely broke their necks in the deadly plunge, adding a haunting finality to an already devastating scene.
Warning: the photo is not for sensitive viewers.
An investigation has been launched to uncover the appearance of the wildebeest and how they managed to breach the university’s grounds. Ubisi speculated that the animals could have come from one of the nearby game farms, though he stressed that the exact source remains uncertain.
