The Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) says its teams are on high alert following warnings of severe thunderstorms expected in most parts of Johannesburg this afternoon.

Flash floods are expected especially in low lying areas.

Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged the public to be cautious.

“We urge residents to exercise caution, to avoid crossing river streams, our motorists also to exercise caution when driving. Extend a safe following distance and also try avoiding crossing roads and bridges that might be flooded. We have our monitoring team in all seven regions of the city together with our specialised rescue unit on high alert.”
