More students treated for foodborne illnesses

FLOWER FOUNTAIN – In total 46 students were taken to a hospital in Bloemfontein with suspected food poisoning.

This comes after the Free State Education Department called on law enforcement agencies to tackle spaza shops selling contaminated food.

The 33 students from Ihobe primary school and 13 students from Itemoheng primary school were taken to hospital.

On Wednesday, 48 students from Daluvuyo primary school in Welcome were admitted to hospital.

They allegedly consumed food products purchased from a local spaza shop and vendors near the school.

Three remain under medical observation, while 45 have now been discharged.

In another incident, an 11-year-old in Alexandra died after consuming suspected poisonous snacks.
