Minibus and metered taxi operators can now confirm their operational status by messaging the WhatsApp number (083 375 1725). This channel also allows them to report route conflicts, arrange meetings with the branch, and access frequently asked questions.
This initiative seeks to improve relations between the City and the taxi industry, which has experienced significant disruptions, including strikes and violence. With 16 535 legal taxis operating in the area, the City aims to facilitate better communication. The Minibus Taxi Task Team (MBTTT) continues its efforts to strengthen ties following the strike in 2023.
According to Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, the new WhatsApp service will expedite processes that previously required in-person submissions or email, which were manually recorded. The system allows operators and drivers to request their 180-day operational status letters, schedule meetings, report conflicts, and access FAQs easily.
To use the service, operators need to save the number, send a ‘hi’ message, and follow the prompts. The Department of Mobility’s 2023/2024 Annual Report revealed that the Western Cape Government supports 1 940 routes and has subsidized over 30 million kilometres.
Furthermore, 155 hearings by the Provincial Regulating Entity have been conducted to streamline operating licenses. The South African National Taxi Association (SANTACO) has reassured the public that they are actively engaging with city officials to maintain safety and operational efficiency.
Nomafrench Mbombo, spokesperson for the DA in the Western Cape, emphasized the Department’s role in ensuring compliance and conflict resolution within the taxi industry. According to Muneera Allie, spokesperson for the Western Cape Mobility Minister, there are currently 16,535 legal minibus taxis.
SANTACO’s Makhosandile Tumana confirmed ongoing discussions to ensure safety during the festive season, stating that there are no plans for strikes or disruptions. The MBTTT, formed in February 2023, serves as a vital forum for collaboration between the Western Cape Government, the City, and taxi industry leaders.
