LIMPOPO – Boxer Khorombi Tshikungulu from Tshino proved too powerful for his opponent, Pieter De Klerk, during a junior middleweight bout at the Middelburg Eric Jiyane Hall two weeks ago. The tournament was organised by Illaga Boxing Promotion, and Tshikungulu claimed victory by technical knockout (TKO).
Tshikungulu overwhelmed De Klerk in the first round, launching aggressive punches from every angle. His relentless attack resulted in De Klerk hitting the canvas. However, after an eight-count by the referee, De Klerk signalled he was ready to continue.
The fight briefly paused later in the round to allow De Klerk to recover after he claimed to have been struck below the belt. Though the bout was scheduled for six rounds, the referee ultimately stopped it, prioritising De Klerk’s safety and preventing further injury.
Tshikungulu, who began boxing in 2020, has his sights set on becoming the WBC champion.
He acknowledges the challenges of going pro, including the demanding testing process, but remains confident about his future.
Looking ahead to next year, Tshikungulu plans to use his upcoming fight as a stepping stone toward a South African elimination title bout.
“I’m ready – physically and emotionally. With the training I’m getting and the support I have, no opponent will stop me,” he said.
Tshikungulu credits his trainers for helping him pursue his dream. “I work hard in the gym, and my trainers are doing a tremendous job to prepare me for becoming a world champion,” he added.
