The Pitso Mosimane School of Soccer (PMSS) was launched at Curro Academy Mbombela High School and Meridian Karino High School on Thursday and Friday, October 24 and 25.
The air was filled with excitement as the PMSS head of sports development programmes, Michelle Baird, explained to the learners what the programme has to offer.
Curro prides itself in balancing physical activity and academics. This programme will expose learners to great opportunities for the development of health, dedication and personal growth.
“We want to establish a centre of excellence and make Curro the soccer school of choice. We want to see these faces representing Bafana Bafana or Banyana Banyana,” said Baird.
PMSS was first launched last year in two Curro schools, Meridian Cosmo City in Johannesburg and Northern Academy High School in Polokwane.
Baird said parents were impressed with the progress they witnessed in their children and this resulted in the programme being expanded to ten more schools.
“The programme will have coaches working at the schools, leading the learners in mass participation physical education, as well as after school extracurricular activities that will include leagues and competitions.”
Damian Murphy, PMSS’s marketing manager, explained: “We aim to develop future elite players by teaching the learners the correct technique from a young age.”

PMSS will be available to learners from Grade R to 12. Younger players will focus on skills, fun activities and ball handling. Players from eight to 12 years, will develop technical skills, co-ordination and teamwork and 13- to 18-year-old players will focus on more advanced tactics, physical conditioning and competitive play.
PMSS will not only benefit the learners, it will create employment opportunities for passionate coaches from local areas. After the launch on Friday, potential coaches were interviewed.
Curro’s project leader of Meridian and Academy sports, Jude Capel, said the school is excited about this partnership. “Sport is very powerful. It has the power to build you up spiritually and academically. It also has the power to change the world.”
