The Gauteng Department of Health said 70 Grade 12 learners from several West Rand schools are receiving treatment following a suspected “food poisoning” incident.
Head of Communications, Motalatale Modiba, said the incident was reported on Thursday and involved 74 female learners from Fochville and Badirile Secondary Schools, and Wedela Technical School.
He said were part of a matric camp at Fochville Secondary School when they presented with symptoms of stomach cramps and diarrhea.
“Upon assessment, all affected learners were referred to Carletonville District Hospital for further medical evaluation.
“One learner was taken to a private facility while 73 went to the hospital,” he said.
“Our healthcare teams are closely monitoring the situation. Fortunately, the learners are mostly in stable condition,” he said.
Modiba said the Gauteng Health Department was particularly concerned by these repeated incidents, following the recent tragedy in Naledi, Soweto, where five children died of suspected food poisoning while one child is still fighting for their life in hospital.
“We remind the public to be vigilant about food safety and ensure the proper handling of perishable and non-perishable food items. It is important that food is cooked thoroughly, stored at the correct temperature, and consumed within safe time frames.
“The washing of hands before handling food and after using the bathroom to avoid cross-contamination is equally important,” Modiba said.
