Free safety inspections will be given in Cape Town and Malmesbury.

According to the Western Cape Department of Mobility, this is part of a larger drive to guarantee that all vehicles transporting learners are roadworthy and follow the highest safety requirements.

Vehicle inspections will take place between 8.30am and 3pm and will check a wide range of critical components to ensure safe and dependable transport for students.

The checks will concentrate on important safety components such tyres, brakes, lighting, suspension, CV joints, electrical systems, exhausts, wipers, and licence plates. Scholar transport providers are encouraged to fully utilise this free service to identify and address potential concerns that may jeopardise vehicle safety.

This comes just after a 16-year-old girl was killed in Mitchells Plain after the taxi she was riding in flipped last week.

The overcrowded Toyota Quantum, which was carrying 28 passengers, flipped on its roof near Swartklip Road.

Muneera Allie, spokesman for the Western Cape Mobility Department, stated that responsible operators should keep their cars in good condition, which helps to reduce collisions and breakdowns on the road.

‘The safety of learners remains our top priority, and this initiative highlights the importance of regular vehicle maintenance, particularly for those who transport children to and from school daily. Scholar transport vehicles are often required to travel under varying road conditions, making it even more critical to ensure that they are properly maintained,’ Allie said.
