Manhunt Underway After 18 Killed in South African Mass Shooting

Police have detained one person for questioning in connection with the Lusikisiki mass shootings, which claimed the lives of 18 people in the Eastern Cape. The victims were shot at a homestead in Ngobozana village, Lusikisiki. The family had been preparing for a traditional ritual scheduled, meant to mark the end of the mourning period for a mother and daughter who were also shot and killed in August last year.

President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his condolences to the affected families and assured them that the South African Police Service (SAPS) has deployed all available resources to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. A specialised team of detectives and forensic experts has been assigned to the crime scene to accelerate the investigation.

The Eastern Cape has been beset by numerous instances of killings, house robberies, and extortion, in addition to high levels of crimes in many townships and communities.
