Tlhapi replaces Maine as North West arts and culture MEC

The former African National Congress Youth League leader was reportedly pushed out to realise the ANC’s 60/40 gender split policy in the provincial executive.

Virginia Tlhapi was sworn in in Mmabatho on Tuesday after Premier Lazarus Mokgosi appointed her to the role.

“I wish to take this opportunity to thank Honorable Maine for his contribution during his tenure as MEC. Let me also congratulate the new MEC as she officially assumes this responsibility with effect from 01 October 2024,” the premier said.

Tlhapi served as Economic Development MEC in the previous administration.

Mokgosi said the new MEC brings with her the relevant expertise.

“You’ll recall that Virginia is not a new MEC. She served in the previous administration, and she’s bringing various experiences, skills and expertise. We hope that her contribution to the people of the North West will be enormous.”

At the same time, Tlhapi said that she would work for all the residents of the province.

“I will make sure that I pursue the interests of the people of Bokone Bophirima. I am not here to change what the former MECs have done. I am just here to make sure that I improve on what they could not get to.”

Maine has been redeployed to the position of deputy speaker in the provincial legislature.
