The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism aims to maximize the province’s tourism potential over the next three years during the National Tourism Careers Expo.
The Expo will facilitate skills development for thousands of learners who aspire to tap into the tourism industry.
Limpopo Province boasts some of the most majestic tourist attractions in South Africa. It is also teeming with some exquisite heritage sites and an abundance of wildlife.
Nearly 70% of one of the world’s largest parks, the Kruger National Park, is in Limpopo. However, to keep the province’s booming tourism industry afloat, more young people have to be drawn to the sector.
With the National Tourism Careers Expo, Limpopo Tourism Agency CEO Moses Ngobeni says they hope to educate over 30 000 learners about the many dynamics of tourism,
“Our target is 8,000 learners from all ten districts. We want to ensure at the end of this we have a buildup to the national one which we will host usually during February-March. We used to attract more than 5,000 but now our target is 8,000 learners plus at the end of the three years we want to have touched the lives of more than 30 000 learners you know that is the target that is set as a province.”
Some of Limpopo’s famed tourist sites such as Lekgalametsi Nature Reserve and The Big Tree have become a shadow of what they used to be. Limpopo MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, Tshitereke Matibe says the provincial government is working hard to restore and commercialise some of the tourism sites,
“We want to commercialise most of our nature reserves, we need to rope in businesses to come and assist us. We have identified them. We also have a budget, as the province we are assisting them but we are putting them out there in the market for the business people to come and work with us. We will be looking for fauna and flora but for the business, we will be doing business in our nature reserves.”
The Limpopo National Tourism Careers Expo has been hosted by various provinces since 2008.
