The South African Police Service (SAPS) In Eastern Cape

17 people were brutally killed in a mass shooting in Ngobozana village, Lusikisiki, in the Eastern Cape. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that a manhunt is underway to apprehend the individuals responsible for this heinous crime. The attack took place in two separate homes, where 13 people, including 12 women and one man, were killed in one house, while another four were murdered in a nearby homestead. A total of 15 women and two men lost their lives, with an 18th victim currently fighting for survival in a hospital after sustaining critical injuries.

Details of the Attack:

According to the SAPS, the attack occurred in the late hours, leaving the small village of Ngobozana in devastation. Police have launched a massive manhunt for the perpetrators, who are believed to have carried out the massacre with precision. SAPS has also indicated that the motive behind the attack remains unclear, though investigations are ongoing.

The victims in the first home were found with multiple gunshot wounds, making the scene both gruesome and tragic. In another nearby homestead, four more people were found killed, making the total death toll 17. With 15 of the victims being women, this incident has raised concerns about the safety of women in rural communities across South Africa.

SAPS Nationwide Crime Combatting Efforts:

In response to the Lusikisiki killings, the Minister of Police, Mr Senzo Mchunu, Deputy Minister Mr Cassel Mathale, and SAPS National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola are expected to brief the media on the SAPS’ nationwide crime combatting efforts. The media briefing will also provide updates on the manhunt for the perpetrators behind the Lusikisiki killings.

The briefing is scheduled for Saturday, 28 September 2024, at 13:00 at Thanduxolo School Hall, KwaNobuhle, Gqerberha. The police leadership is set to outline measures being taken not only to bring the killers to justice but also to address the increasing crime rates in rural areas.

The Scale of the Tragedy:

This mass shooting is one of the deadliest in recent memory, sending shockwaves through the Lusikisiki community and the Eastern Cape province as a whole. Community leaders, local officials, and residents have expressed their grief and outrage, demanding swift justice for the victims and their families.

Eastern Cape Provincial Police spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana, stated, “This is a tragic and senseless act of violence. We are determined to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of all residents in the area. Our officers are working tirelessly to track down the perpetrators.”

Local government officials, civil society groups, and law enforcement agencies have also voiced their concern over the vulnerability of rural communities like Ngobozana to such violent crimes.

Reactions from the Government and Community:

The Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous crime” and promising the full might of the law to apprehend the culprits. “This is a time of immense grief for the families affected, and we stand in solidarity with them. We will ensure that no stone is left unturned in this investigation. The safety and security of our people, particularly in rural communities, is a priority.”

Community members and traditional leaders have also spoken out, calling for greater police presence in remote areas. “We have been asking for more protection in our village for a long time. This tragedy shows just how vulnerable we are,” said a local community leader, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retribution.

Background on Crime in Rural Eastern Cape:

The Eastern Cape, one of South Africa’s poorest provinces, has been grappling with high levels of violent crime. Rural areas, in particular, have been hotspots for criminal activity, often due to inadequate policing and resources. Over the years, there have been increasing reports of farm attacks, robberies, and murders in isolated villages and towns, exacerbating the safety concerns of residents.

According to SAPS crime statistics, the Eastern Cape has witnessed a rise in violent crimes, including murder and gender-based violence. The Lusikisiki mass shooting highlights the need for urgent intervention to address the escalating violence and ensure the safety of all citizens, especially in rural areas where access to law enforcement is limited.
