A horrifying discovery made by a landlord continues to haunt him.

The man from Odendaalsrus, Free State, found the body of a newborn baby in a freezer.

Moeketsi Sebotho is now asking for immediate psychosocial support to help him cope with this.

Moeketsi made the gruesome discovery when he was clearing out a hut of a 24-year-old woman who was going to move to another room in Block 5 in Kutlwanong.

Tenant’s delay in moving

The tenant had asked for a few extra days to clean her new home, which Moeketsi agreed to.

“I gave her three days to finish it, but she didn’t stick to the agreement. I reminded her several times to pick up her furniture, because I had to move mine to the room she was renting. I also spoke to her parents and her mother gave me permission to remove her things,” Moeketsi explained.

Gruesome discovery

On Wednesday, September 12, Moeketsi opened the freezer, which was his, and found a plastic bag containing the frozen body of a baby.

“I was shocked and immediately called the community,” he said.

Moeketsi, who was traumatized by the discovery, said he had no idea there was a dead baby in the freezer.

“I used to keep my meat in that freezer, but I hadn’t done that for the last three months. That day I found a brown shirt in there and got curious. When I opened it, I found the frozen body of a newborn baby. I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he said.

Family shocked

The tenant’s parents and older sister were also shocked when they arrived at the scene.

Emergency services pronounced the baby dead and the body was taken to the state morgue.

“The incident has silenced my mind. I am traumatized. I am calling on the provincial social development department to provide me with psychosocial support. My life has changed completely. I cannot sleep at night and have bad dreams,” Moeketsi complained.

Provincial Department of Social Development spokesperson Thembile Nqabeni confirmed that the department provides psychosocial support, including trauma counseling.

He advised Moeketsi to go to the social development offices in Welkom for help.

The mother of the deceased newborn baby has been released without prosecution by the court in Odendaal.

Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the NPA, said the case has not yet been registered but police investigations are ongoing.
