Four killed in crash on R40 between Mbombela and Barberton | Lowvelder

A SUV and an articulated truck crashed on the R40 between Mbombela and Barberton earlier today, September 21.

Four people, including the driver of the SUV and a child, were killed on impact. Furthermore, they were burnt beyond recognition when the vehicles caught on fire.

According to the spokesperson of the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, the driver of the truck sustained some injuries.

“The R40 between Barberton and Mbombela is currently closed following the collision. Motorists travelling between these two towns are advised to do so via the R38 leading to Kaapmuiden,” he said.

Mmusi also said the cause of the crash remains unclear, however, investigations are under way. He advised motorists to be extra cautious on the roads as the unfavourable weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend.
