Emergency services help thousands of people stuck on the N3 after snow blockade

Since the N3 toll route was reopened last night, relief and recovery operations have been underway.

Thousands of people travelling on the national route were left stranded in their vehicles on Friday as traffic came to a standstill due to snowfall.

On Saturday, diggers and rescue teams began clearing the area near Montrose in Harrismith.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate and other agencies escort vehicles via the southern lanes towards Durban.

Motorists are now being urged to drive carefully and slowly.

The KZN Department of Transport fears that more people may be stuck on alternative routes.

The Gift of the Givers was one of the relief teams sent to provide assistance.

Founder Imtiaz Sooliman said on Saturday they were distributing blankets, hot drinks and food.

“The roads are impassable and helicopters can’t fly. Tow trucks can’t drive. The only option is graders. The Gift of the Givers is on the ground with the Road Traffic Inspectorate and N3 Toll Concession. Our vehicles are there with supplies.

“We have also spoken to garages along the N3 that if people come by and need help, want hot drinks and snacks, we will pay for that. Motorists can use that help.”
