Multiple passengers injured as train derails in Western Cape

About 25 people were injured when two coaches derailed at Dal Josafat station near Paarl last night.

Multiple others were entrapped. 

The train was en route from Cape Town to Wellington station when the incident occurred.

Emergency services such as ambulances, firefighters, and the South African Police Services were on site to assist the injured passengers.

Metrorail Western Cape said that, as per regulatory requirements, the incident had been reported to the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR).

“It is reported that twenty five (25) passengers were injured and were taken to various hospitals in the area by ambulances for further medical care.

“Other passengers that were onboard were transported home.

“At this stage, the incident is under investigation,” they said in a statement. 

The Drakenstein Farm Watch, a private firefighting service, said they received a request for assistance at 18:41.

At this stage it is understood that no fatalities had been reported.
