TEACHERS’ jobs are on the line.

In Gauteng, Educatio MEC Matome Chiloane said about 3 400 posts are affected. In the Western Cape, about 2 400 teachers stand to lose their jobs starting January 2025. 

But Sadtu has taken the Western Cape Education Department to court to prevent it from continuing with teacher job cuts.

The teacher’s organisation wants the Western Cape to disclose the number of teachers that will lose jobs in each school.

Teachers, activists, and parents are planning a strike action to discourage the Western Cape Education Department from cutting jobs.

The Gauteng Department of Education said all provinces are affected by job cuts.

MEC Chiloane said over R4 billion budget cut by the national Treasury is what put the departments in a tight corner, but Gauteng chose not to go that route.

“We’re fighting to keep our teachers. There’s no way we can cut teachers when we have high-pressure areas. It won’t make sense to subject one teacher to 100 pupils.”

The MEC said they’re engaging with the Treasury to increase the budget. He said they have decided to rather cut the budget somewhere in scholar transport, food nutrition, just to keep teachers.

“We are growing the system, and I don’t think that would be a wise move in Gauteng. I’m just disappointed in the decision taken by the Western Cape Department,” said Chiloane.
