As Women’s Month concluded, the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) emphasised the importance of training women as first responders by offering the first responder training programme through Lebone College of Emergency Care.
This initiative focuses on equipping participants with critical life-saving skills such as CPR, assisting convulsing victims, managing severe wounds (including stab wounds and gunshots), and treating injuries like burns, sprains, and strains.

Since the programme’s relaunch in 2023, the GDoH has prioritised training community members from disadvantaged areas, including townships, informal settlements, and hostels (TISH).
To date, over 6 000 individuals have been trained to respond swiftly and effectively in emergency situations.
“Accidents and emergencies happen every day in our communities.
“In these critical moments, the presence of a first aid-trained individual can make a profound difference and save someone’s life,” stated Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
She highlighted the importance of empowering women to make a difference in their communities and encouraged those enrolled in the programme to share their knowledge and skills with their families and neighbours.

The training programme is facilitated in partnership with the South African Congress of Non-Profit Organisations (SACONO).
Tintswalo Makhubele, SACONO chairperson, emphasised that the first responder training is a key step in upskilling communities and empowering individuals to assist their families, schools, and communities during emergencies.
She noted that the training is particularly vital in addressing incidents such as fire-related emergencies, where timely intervention can prevent injuries and save lives.
The GDoH recognises the role of first aid in community well-being and is committed to fostering a culture of preparedness and care.
The rollout of the first responder training will continue across the province, with a team of dedicated emergency care professionals providing training every two weeks.
