The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has deployed investigators to examine the cause of a devastating crash that occurred in Mgwenyane, Libode, Eastern Cape, claiming the lives of five people and leaving twelve others injured. The accident took place on Thursday, 5 September 2024, when a fully loaded Toyota Quantum minibus taxi overturned on a gravel road. The victims included a couple and their two children, the youngest being a few months old, as well as an elderly woman in her 70s who passed away after being admitted to St Barnabas Hospital in Ntlaza.
Preliminary reports from the Eastern Cape Department of Transport suggest that brake failure may have contributed to the crash, particularly as the vehicle reversed uncontrollably on a hilly section of the road. Authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide, with further investigations underway to determine whether other factors, such as vehicle roadworthiness or driver behaviour, played a role in the tragic incident.
The RTMC has extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes the injured passengers a swift recovery. Local authorities are working closely with RTMC officials to assess all contributing factors and prevent future accidents of this nature.
This incident marks yet another alarming reminder of the ongoing road safety challenges faced in South Africa, particularly in rural areas where road conditions can pose significant risks to drivers and passengers alike. The accident occurred just days after a separate fatal crash in the Free State, which also claimed five lives when a vehicle overturned on the R723 between Parys and Koppies.
