HAMMERS, pangas, knives, and drugs are some of the weapons that were confiscated from pupils in four schools during a police raid.

The schools have been identified as hotspots for gang-related crimes and violence in Masoyi, Mpumalanga.

On Tuesday, 3 September, law enforcement officers, led by Community Safety MEC Jackie Macie, raided Bhekiswako, Siphumelele, Khanyisani, and Lungisani secondary schools.

They found some of the items hidden behind notice boards, under tables, and inside rubbish bins.

The operation was prompted by numerous complaints from the Department of Education about criminal behaviour displayed by some pupils at these schools.

Macie said upon receiving complaints from the department that there are problematic schools, the department pounced on the schools unannounced.

“We found drugs including dagga, cocaine, pangas, knives, and these are materials or substances that are supposed to be not part of the school. We’re here to assist the Department of Education and the community to say the culture of teaching and learning at school should be respected,” said Macie.

“What worries the department is that what we see today is the future of the country. If we don’t nip it in the bud as of now, it means the future of our country is doomed. It’ll mean that instead of grooming professionals, we’ll be grooming criminals.”

A grade 11 pupil found in possession of a knife at Siphumelele told the police he was planning to stab a fellow pupil who bullied him. He said he had to protect himself.

She told Daily Sun they feared for their lives as bullies are harassing them.

“There are always fights in our school. Pupils come with knives and other dangerous weapons. We’re happy such operations are conducted as they ensure our safety,” she said.

Department of Education spokesman, Jasper Zwane, commended work done by the Department of Community Safety in getting rid of dangerous weapons and substance abuse at school.

“We’re also calling parents to help us look at what their kids carry to school,” said Zwane.
