THE Gauteng Community Safety Committee has expressed concerns over the kidnapping of one of its members in the legislature, Moipone Mhlongo.
Mhlongo, who is the chairwoman of the Portfolio Committee on Education and one of the youngest members of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) in Gauteng, was kidnapped on Monday, 1 September, and released on the same day after being hijacked in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, under circumstances that remain unclear.
Mhlongo has been involved in efforts to combat crimes such as extortion, armed robberies, and hijackings.
The community safety chairman, Bandile Masuku, expressed gratitude to law enforcement agencies, security personnel, and everyone who contributed towards her safe return.
“Their swift and tireless efforts were instrumental in bringing this traumatic event to a peaceful conclusion. We further thank members of the public who, upon learning about this ordeal, shared details of this incident on their various social media platforms to ensure that every possible effort was made to locate her and bring her home safely to her family,” he said.

Masuku said while they’re immensely relieved by Mhlongo’s safe return, they remain deeply concerned about the broader implications of such heinous acts of criminality. He said acts of violence and intimidation have no place in society and law enforcement agencies shouldn’t be deterred in their pursuit of justice and peace.
“The unprecedented rise in violent crimes, including extortion, armed robberies, and hijackings, continues to create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity that can no longer be ignored in our communities. At times like this, decisive action’s required to restore law and order, protect lives, and prevent further deterioration of safety across various communities,” he said.
