Three suspected extortionists killed in shootout with Eastern Cape police

Three suspected extortionists have been shot dead during a gun battle with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape.

The deadly confrontation occurred on Monday, November 2, 2026, at approximately 10.15am in Nothintsila Locality, after police received information about three men allegedly involved in extorting money from local businesses.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said TRT officers from Mthatha were responding to intelligence about suspects allegedly targeting shops in the area.

“It is reported that TRT combat members from Mthatha received information about three male suspects who were allegedly involved in extortion and were collecting money from local shops,” Gantana said.

Suspects allegedly opened fire on police

According to Gantana, officers were travelling along the Nothintsila gravel road when they spotted three men matching the descriptions of the suspected extortionists.

Police stopped their vehicles and approached the men, but the situation escalated into a deadly exchange of gunfire.

“The members stopped their vehicles and approached the suspects. The suspects opened fire on the members, and the members retaliated. All three suspects were fatally wounded. No police members were injured,” Gantana said.

All three men died at the scene, while the officers escaped unharmed.

Three firearms recovered, suspects remain unidentified

Police recovered three pistols from the scene, all of which had their serial numbers removed.

“Three pistols belonging to the suspects, with serial numbers filed off, were recovered at the scene. The suspects have not yet been identified,” Gantana said.

Cases of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition have been opened.

IPID launches investigation into fatal shooting

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was called to the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Under the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Act, deaths resulting from police action must be reported to IPID for investigation.

Gantana confirmed that the directorate had been notified in accordance with the law.

“IPID was summoned to the scene in line with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate Act, 2011 (Act No. 1 of 2011) which requires that deaths resulting from police action be reported to and investigated by IPID,” she said.

Police have urged anyone with information that could assist in identifying the deceased men or uncovering alleged extortion activities in Ngqeleni to come forward.

“The SAPS remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will continue to act decisively against criminal elements,” Gantana said.
